Keeping Bhutan clean
Her Royal Highness Ashi Chimi Yangzom Wangchuck launched the week-long environment campaign, “Keep Bhutan Clean” on November 19 at the Citizen’s Initiative for Coronation and Centenary Celebrations (CICCC) ground in Thimphu.
Her Royal Highness released two books, Bhutan Environment Outlook 2008 and the State of Environment Report of Thimphu City as a part of the launch.
Organised by the CICCC, the campaign focused on five broad areas: solid waste, disposable waste and its management, bio diversity, water and air pollution and the prevention of forest fire.
During the launch, the Deputy Minister of National Environment Commission, Dasho Nado Rinchhen said that Bhutan has high reputation on environmental issues. “Bhutanese must strive to maintain its reputation,” he said.
Bhutan is strongly committed to the principle of environmental sustainability as it is one of the Millennium Development Goals.
The Bhutan Environment Outlook 2008 contains the state of the environment in terms of four key components; land, water, air and biodiversity. It describes the various pressures impacting the resources, the conditions of these resources and the responses taken by the government and that people to minimise harm to environment and human health.
After the launch, a 15-minute environmental film was screened to the audience.
