First magazine on women hits the market
September 30: Bhutanese women will now get to read a magazine that is all about women. Yeewong the first women magazine is launched in the capital today. The magazine is published by Motion Pictures Company’s Design and Publication unit.
The 132 page magazine is about embracing every aspect of Bhutanese womanhood that makes Bhutanese women special and different.
“Lot of people have misconception that it is going to be a fashion magazine and entertainment magazine, a beauty magazine,” Pema Choden Tenzin, editor of the Yeewong magazine said.
She refutes.
“No, it is not just about women as in showcasing certain women but we are exploring new avenues about women and sort of trying to identify news ideas on how to showcase Bhutanese women,” she added.
The magazine’s editorial team says the name of the magazine was titled Yeewong so that Bhutanese can closely associate with the name. The meaning of Yeewong is something that appeals the heart.
The first issue of the magazine covers mostly about Miss Bhutan Beauty pageant 2008. However, the later issues will focus more on various issues related to women.
“We are collaborating with RENEW and Tarayana and they have agreed to provide materials on domestic violence, issue based subjects and we are also working with some doctors at the hospitals so that they can provide us information on women’s health,” she editor said, adding that the magazine will also showcase about homes and some other interesting programmes.
The price of the magazine is Nu. 100. Today, some 5,000 copies will be distributed in various book stalls in Thimphu and Pheuntsholing. Another 5,000 copies will be distributed in other Dzongkhags soon.
The magazine will be published bi-annually.
