New dept to promote small and medium enterprises
The cabinet has approved the establishment of a new department in the economic affairs ministry to promote micro, small and medium enterprises in the kingdom.
To be called the Department of Cottage and Small Industries, the department will help create equitable and balanced regional development while at the same generate employment and facilitate the development of cultural industry
Among others, the department is mandated to formulate a policy framework with specific interventions and support, implementation modalities, and institutional and regulatory frameworks to spur the growth and development of small and cottage industries.
The department will also conduct sector studies and analysis, build region specific resource inventories to identify the areas of opportunities in different parts of the country, and enhance business development services, and support service packages.
The plan for the department is in keeping with the 10th Plan which was presented to the joint session of the cabinet ministers and GHN commission in August 2008.
