The Golden Youth of 2010 shares his thoughts
Golden Youth Award Camp, 2010, is the most memorable experience of my life. I have never seen and experienced such a well-organized camp in my life. I would say that the camp was a model of peace, cooperation and harmony.
The camp gave a platform to gain abundant enriching experiences to prepare oneself in lifelong pursuit of skills and knowledge. It is an opportunity for the youth to show their latent talents and prove their worth.
The GYA camp provided an occasion for the youth to gain experience, built confidence and meet with talented friends from across the length and breadth of the country. In addition, students shared their knowledge and views and built friendship.
It was where the future leaders of Bhutan came together.
Unquestionably, the camp showed the way forward to the Bhutanese youth irrespective of their wealth and fortune. It was time and space for the youth as envisaged by the fourth Druk Gyalpo and Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Pem Wangchuck.
I am most delighted and humbled by the honour of being named the Golden Youth of the year. This is a defining moment in my life. For me, the honour means so much, yet it means I must work even harder. Now I have so much at stake. I am a youth leader, and I must be truly one. It is at once an unforgettable honour and an enormous responsibility.
Had there been no such noble initiatives, the potential of Bhutanese youth would be hidden in the small unknown pockets of the country. And particularly for me, it would be difficult to be known beyond the confines of my school and community. I have rarely been beyond Norbugang Primary School (six hours walk from the road head), Nganglam Lower Secondary School and Nganglam Higher Secondary School.
The honour I brought back to school and home has brought smiles to my schools, teachers, friends, neighbours, and indeed my family.
I look forward to keeping the smiles ever bright and inspiring. And I know should be worth those gracious smiles.
My message to the youth of Bhutan is: Aim for the best, make right choices, and embrace the positive. We are the future of Bhutan.
