‘Without women’s rights, there’s no human rights’

March 7, 2010: As we celebrate internationally the successes and struggles of women, we join the world to commemorate the International Women’s Day.

Today and every day, let us march forward collectively with a conviction that without women’s rights there are no human rights as all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.  We have a social responsibility to improve the wellbeing of the people at all levels and every facet of our society.  I urge the Government and the people of Bhutan to take personal responsibility to embrace this year’s international theme “equal rights, equal opportunities: progress for all”.

This year’s theme resonates His Majesty’s vision of Gross National Happiness; if we are to uphold this noble vision, we must put an end to the reproduction of attitudes and beliefs that obstruct women from accessing their full potential.

I commend the progress Bhutan has made over the past decades, and we must continue our advancement as a progressive nation.

On this day, I pay my tribute to Bhutanese women and women around the globe for their strength and perseverance as the architects of life.  As mothers, the epitome of divinity, they spend their lifetime showering unconditional affection nurturing preciously and adding meaning to every aspect of life.  Wisest among the leaders, are women who teach us to recognize the phenomenal treasures of versatile capacity endowed upon us that could be utilized meaningfully.  As strugglers, women enable us to perceive the purity of hearts filled with compassion and consideration for others around them and demonstrate their resilience.  It is a privilege to express this appreciation in honor of women around the world.
