A Majestic Gesture

Thimphu: His Majesty the King yesterday visited the gewogs of Tsento and Doteng in Paro to see the damages caused by the earthquake of September 18.

Addressing the people and local government officials who had gathered in Jitsiphu and Pasochukha, under temporary tarpaulin sheds built among the rice fields, His Majesty expressed grief because of the damages caused. “But as King it warms my heart to see the whole nation, the government and the people working together,” His Majesty said and reiterated the words that calmed and comforted people during the earthquake in 2009. “I have always said that our nation is like one family. We rejoice together, we grieve together.”

His Majesty invited people to express their concerns and needs. Expressing their gratitude to His Majesty for personally visiting them, a villager whose house was damaged submitted, “We never felt we were left alone.” “While we will rebuild our houses, our King will be our source of strength, support and guidance. Where else can we turn to?” he added.

A woman living in a temporary shed built by the Desuung and army personnel said she was worried about the future of her children. “Now I feel I can face it.”

Listening to their submissions His Majesty said, “I cannot tell you not to worry. How can I say that when your lifelong efforts go to dust. However, I assure you that we, the government, people and King, will work together to restore your lives.”

“Another positive aspect of these tragedies is that we are all learning from these experiences and getting more prepared and better skilled to deal with such disasters,” His Majesty told the gathering.

His Majesty reminded the government to complete the assessment of the damages as soon as possible and do it well.

The Minister of Economic Affairs, Khandu Wangchuk, who also represents Paro in the Parliament and other members of the parliament were also present.

His Majesty visited Ta Dzong – the national museum that has suffered some damages.

The Minister of Home and Cultural Affairs, Minjur Dorji and Chief Operations Officer of the armed forces, Maj. Gen. Batoo Tshering are accompanying His Majesty the King on this tour.
